  23. VHS caught on when
  24. a) the six-hour recordable tape came out (effectivly squashing
  25. Beta as a competitor, at the same time) and
  26. b) the price of VHS decks hit the impulse purchase price point
  27. (about $300) (remember the early "piano key" VHS decks that weighed
  28. about 50 lbs. and cost over $1000?)

  30. Personally I think these "Internet in a box under $500 hook it up
  31. to your teevee" machines ain't gonna be such a good thing. Have you
  32. ever tried to read 80 column text on a television? NTSC video isn't
  33. designed for it at all. HDTV will change that but whenever the
  34. HDTV standards are finally sorted out and sets go into mass
  35. production we're back to the $1000 price point again for a few
  36. years :-/
